CeFi, or centralized finance, describes cryptocurrency services operated by a company or other central organization. The provider controls accounts, custody, transaction approval, or product rules rather than relying entirely on public smart contracts. Centralized exchanges, crypto lenders, brokers, payment services, and hosted staking products are common CeFi examples.

Customers usually create an account, accept legal terms, and complete identity checks. The provider holds private keys or uses a custodian, records customer balances internally, and decides how withdrawals are processed. This model can support bank transfers, password recovery, customer service, and cheap internal transactions. It also means the customer depends on the organization and its partners.

CeFi differs from DeFi, where users generally interact with on-chain contracts from their own wallets. The line is not always clean. A company may offer a simple interface to a DeFi protocol, or a tokenized product may rely on centralized reserves and administrators. Users should trace who controls assets, makes risk decisions, and can change or stop the service instead of relying only on branding.

CeFi matters because it provides accessible routes between traditional money and digital assets. Businesses use it for payments, trading, reporting, and custody. Individuals may prefer account recovery over managing seed phrases. Central operators can also screen fraud and reverse internal mistakes, although confirmed external blockchain withdrawals usually remain irreversible.

The largest risk is counterparty failure. A lending company may promise yield while making opaque loans or using customer assets as collateral. If borrowers default or many customers withdraw together, the provider may suspend access or become insolvent. Hacks, insider fraud, regulatory orders, and unclear asset ownership can cause further losses. Interest is compensation for risk, not free income.

Evaluate the specific legal entity, jurisdiction, custody arrangement, audited financial information, asset segregation, liabilities, withdrawal history, and product terms. Check whether deposits are insured and exactly what that insurance covers. Use strong authentication and keep records. Self-custody reduces reliance on a provider but introduces key-management risk. The best choice depends on the task, asset value, legal needs, and user's ability to manage security.
