An exchange is a market or service where participants trade one asset for another. Cryptocurrency exchanges support pairs such as BTC to USD, ETH to stablecoins, or one token to another. They may use company-operated order books, decentralized smart contracts, brokers, or hybrid settlement models.

A centralized exchange, or CEX, opens customer accounts, takes custody of deposits, and records most trades internally. It can offer fiat payments, fast execution, advanced orders, customer support, and deep liquidity. Users depend on the operator's security, solvency, compliance, and withdrawal access. A displayed balance is a claim on the company rather than direct control of on-chain assets.

A decentralized exchange, or DEX, lets users authorize trades from their wallets. Automated market makers quote against liquidity pools, while order-book systems match bids and asks. Settlement is public and composable, but users manage keys, gas, token approvals, and contract selection. Thin pools and malicious tokens can create severe losses.

Exchanges matter because they provide price discovery and liquidity. Traders, businesses, and users convert between assets, hedge exposure, and obtain tokens needed for network activity. Market quality depends on depth, spread, uptime, and the ability to deposit or withdraw, not only reported volume. Wash trading can make an inactive market appear popular.
