Weight assigned to a participant's choices in governance.

Voting power is the weight a participant has when a governance system calculates decisions. One vote may equal one token, one unit of staked value, one verified person, or a score based on reputation and delegation. The method determines whose preferences influence proposals, budgets, upgrades, and protocol parameters.

Token-weighted governance is common because balances are easy to verify on-chain. If one token equals one vote, large holders receive more influence. A snapshot can measure balances at a specific block, preventing simple reuse after voting starts. Rules must still decide whether treasury, exchange, vesting, bridged, borrowed, or liquidity-pool tokens count.

Voting power matters because formal openness does not guarantee distributed control. A few founders, investors, custodians, or delegates may determine outcomes despite thousands of holders. Quorum, proposal thresholds, timelocks, veto councils, and multisignature execution can shift practical authority beyond the vote itself.
