A CEX, or centralized exchange, is a company-operated platform that lets customers buy, sell, and often custody cryptocurrency. The operator manages accounts, matches trades, and processes deposits and withdrawals. Users usually trade balances recorded in the exchange's internal ledger rather than settling every order directly on a blockchain.
Centralized exchanges commonly provide fiat bank transfers, card purchases, limit and market orders, derivatives, staking, and customer support. Their order books can offer deep liquidity and fast execution because transactions between customers remain off-chain until withdrawal. Users normally complete identity and anti-money laundering checks, with requirements depending on jurisdiction and service.
A deposit gives the exchange control over the assets' private keys. The customer has a contractual claim on the company rather than direct on-chain control of those coins. This arrangement makes account recovery and frequent trading easier, but creates counterparty risk. Insolvency, hacks, frozen withdrawals, poor internal controls, or legal action can prevent customers from accessing funds.
CEXs matter because they connect banking systems with crypto markets and provide price discovery at scale. A new user can exchange local currency for BTC or ETH without managing an on-chain swap. Professional traders use order types, APIs, and large markets. Companies may rely on exchanges for treasury conversion, though institutional use requires legal, custody, and operational review.
Before choosing a centralized crypto exchange, review supported countries, licensing claims, custody structure, asset segregation, security history, fees, insurance limits, and withdrawal policies. Proof-of-reserves reports can show certain assets at a moment in time, but may omit liabilities, borrowed funds, or affiliated exposure. An audit is more useful when scope, methodology, and responsible entity are clear.
Protect the account with a unique password, phishing-resistant authentication, address allowlists, and alerts. Reach the service through a saved domain instead of search ads or direct messages. Test withdrawals before depositing a large amount and retain tax records. Keeping long-term assets in self-custody can reduce exchange exposure, but only when the user can secure and recover the wallet correctly.
