TVL stands for Total Value Locked, an estimate of the market value of assets deposited in a decentralized finance protocol, application, or blockchain ecosystem. It can include liquidity pools, lending deposits, staking contracts, vaults, and bridge collateral. The exact components and valuation method vary by data provider.

A TVL calculation generally multiplies token quantities held in selected contracts by reference prices, then adds the results. If a protocol holds 1,000 tokens worth $100 each, that component contributes $100,000. Dollar TVL changes when token prices move even if users make no deposits or withdrawals, so quantity and price effects should be separated.

TVL matters because it offers a rough view of capital using a protocol and the potential scale of assets at risk. A lending market with more deposits may support more borrowing, while a deep liquidity pool can handle larger trades. However, capital is not the same as product activity, profitability, decentralization, or safety. A dormant pool can have high TVL and little useful volume.

Double counting is common. A user deposits ETH into a liquid-staking protocol, receives a receipt token, then deposits that receipt into a lending market. Ecosystem dashboards may count both positions even though they derive from the same underlying value. Recursive borrowing can amplify reported figures. Bridges and wrapped assets require careful treatment to avoid counting locked backing and issued representations as separate capital.

Temporary incentives can attract yield-seeking deposits that leave when rewards end. A protocol's own token may inflate TVL when its market is thin or manipulated. Administrator-controlled contracts, inactive balances, and borrowed assets may be included differently. Providers can revise methodology, making historical comparisons inconsistent unless changes are documented.

Use TVL alongside fees, revenue, volume, utilization, active users, asset concentration, withdrawals, and security history. Compare protocols within similar categories and inspect whether figures are gross or net of debt. Record the original data provider, exact timestamp, and methodology when using historical series. Do not assume a high TVL makes deposits insured or contracts safe. TVL is a descriptive capital metric whose usefulness depends on transparent definitions, reliable prices, and avoiding duplicate economic claims.
