A paper wallet is a physical document containing a cryptocurrency private key, seed phrase, or encoded version such as a QR code. It keeps secret material away from an internet-connected device when created correctly. Despite the name, it is usually key storage rather than software that builds, verifies, and signs transactions safely.

Early paper wallets often displayed one public address and its corresponding private key. Users sent funds to the address and later imported or swept the key into wallet software. Modern hierarchical deterministic wallets instead generate many addresses from a recovery phrase. Writing that phrase on paper creates a physical backup, but the active wallet may still run on a phone or hardware device.

Paper storage matters because online theft is not the only key risk. Malware cannot remotely extract a secret that has never touched a connected device. However, secure generation is difficult. A fake generator, weak random-number source, compromised computer, printer memory, camera, or saved PDF can expose the key before any funds arrive. Printing from an ordinary website is particularly risky.

Physical threats include fire, water, fading ink, theft, accidental disposal, and unauthorized copying. Anyone who reads the private key or recovery phrase can usually move the assets. Laminating may protect against moisture but can trap heat or damage some inks. Metal backups improve durability but still require secure placement and protection from discovery.

Using a single-key paper wallet also creates transaction risks. Importing the key into an online wallet exposes it, while spending only part of the balance may send change to an address the user did not expect. Sweeping the entire balance into a newly generated modern wallet is generally safer than continuing to reuse the old key. Users should account for network fees before recovery.

For most people, a reputable hardware wallet with an offline, tested recovery backup is a better default. Follow the manufacturer's official setup instructions, verify addresses on the device screen, and never enter the recovery phrase into a website. Store copies in separately secured locations and plan inheritance carefully. Paper can support offline backup, but safe custody depends on generation, transaction handling, recovery testing, and physical security.
