A native token is the asset defined directly by a blockchain protocol and used for core network functions. It commonly pays transaction fees, rewards block producers, and supports proof-of-stake security or proof-of-work economics. Bitcoin's BTC and Ethereum's ETH are well-known native assets.
Native assets differ from smart contract tokens. ETH balances are part of Ethereum account state, while ERC-20 balances are recorded inside individual token contracts. A user can pay Ethereum gas with ETH under normal rules but not directly with an arbitrary ERC-20 token. Wallets and applications may sponsor fees or abstract this difference.
