Market Cap
Token price multiplied by circulating supply.
Market cap, short for market capitalization, estimates a cryptocurrency's current network or token value by multiplying reference price by circulating supply. If 100 million tokens circulate at $2 each, the market cap is $200 million. The calculation is simple, but its inputs and interpretation require care.
Price may come from one venue or a volume-weighted collection of exchanges. Circulating supply attempts to exclude locked, burned, treasury, or otherwise unavailable units. Data providers use different methods, especially for bridged tokens, team holdings, rebasing assets, and unclear contracts. Two dashboards can therefore report different market caps.
Market cap matters because unit price alone says little. A token costing $0.01 can be valued more highly than one costing $1,000 if its supply is much larger. Market cap offers a common comparison, while fully diluted valuation applies price to total or maximum future supply to highlight potential dilution.
Neither metric equals cash invested or available for withdrawal. The last trade sets a marginal price for a small amount. Selling a major share would move through order-book bids or an AMM curve, lowering realized prices. A token can display a high market cap while having little exit liquidity and concentrated ownership.
Supply changes also matter. Unlocks, emissions, burns, migrations, and administrator minting can change circulation. A low circulating float can produce an apparently strong market cap and enormous FDV before insiders unlock. Market capitalization may rise while each token falls if supply grows sufficiently.
Use market cap as one descriptive metric, not a fair-value model. Compare assets with similar economics and investigate price sources, supply, liquidity, control, user demand, revenue, and security. Check contract addresses and provider methodology. Market cap helps describe scale, but it cannot show solvency, rights, decentralization, adoption quality, or the price at which a large holder can actually exit.
Historical comparisons need consistent supply and price methodology. Token migrations, redenominations, burns, rebases, and bridge failures can break a simple chart. Analysts should document the timestamp and source for every input, then pair capitalization with realistic order-book or pool depth. A project can move into a higher market-cap ranking through new issuance alone, without attracting equal net demand or improving its underlying product.

It estimates value if future units traded at today's price, which is unlikely to remain constant as supply changes. Compare FDV with circulating market cap, unlock schedule, demand, treasury, and holder concentration. Some tokens have no credible fixed maximum.
- Market cap applies the latest or reference unit price to every circulating token. Selling all units would consume available buy orders and push price down, so holders could not collectively realize that number. Thin pools, wash trades, stale prices, locked tokens, and fragmented chains make the estimate less reliable. It is a valuation snapshot, not money held in reserve.
- Use market cap to compare approximate network or token scale, preferably among projects with similar purpose and supply accounting. Combine it with fully diluted valuation, unlocks, liquidity, revenue, usage, security, governance, and control rights. Check how the provider defines circulating supply and aggregates prices. A low market cap can indicate opportunity, poor demand, or easy manipulation.
