Dust is a very small cryptocurrency or token balance that is worth little and may cost more to transfer than its market value. The exact threshold changes with asset price, network fees, and transaction format. Dust can be a harmless leftover, an operational issue, or part of a privacy or phishing attack.
On Bitcoin and other UTXO networks, wallets spend discrete outputs rather than subtracting from one account balance. An output can be considered dust when its value is too small relative to the expected fee required to spend it. Node relay policies may reject newly created outputs below a calculated threshold, though the coins are not automatically destroyed.
Account-based chains also use the term informally for tiny native currency or token amounts. Swaps, fee calculations, airdrops, reward distributions, and rounding can leave residual balances. Exchanges sometimes let customers combine or convert these small balances into a common asset, usually under platform-specific minimums and fees.
Dust matters because managing many tiny balances can be uneconomic and harm privacy. Consolidating Bitcoin outputs when fees are low can reduce future transaction size, but spending several outputs together provides evidence that one entity controls them. Users who need stronger privacy should understand coin control and seek current, reputable wallet guidance.
Unexpected token dust may be spam. Scammers create token names or metadata containing a website and hope recipients visit it. Interacting can lead to phishing or unsafe approvals. A dusting attacker may also monitor later spending to connect addresses. Merely receiving dust does not expose a private key, so urgent action is usually unnecessary.
Hide unrecognized assets in the wallet interface and avoid clicking their links. Do not send them to an advertised burn site or sign a claim transaction. For familiar assets, compare value with network cost before converting or moving them. Keep enough native currency for intended fees, but do not confuse unusable dust with a security breach. The safest response depends on asset type, network model, provenance, privacy needs, and transaction cost.
