A burner wallet is a separate cryptocurrency wallet created for temporary or higher-risk activity and funded with only a small amount. Its purpose is to limit the assets and permissions exposed if an application, device, or signature is malicious. It is risk isolation, not a guarantee of privacy or security.

Common uses include testing a new decentralized application, claiming an uncertain mint, attending an on-chain event, playing a game, or demonstrating a wallet in public. The burner should contain only what the task needs. Valuable tokens, long-term NFTs, governance rights, and treasury access remain in a more secure wallet that never connects to the unfamiliar service.

This separation matters because wallet connections can lead to approvals, signatures, and transactions that users misunderstand. A malicious token approval may let a contract transfer assets of that type later. A phishing signature may authorize an order or account change. When the exposed wallet holds little and has no authority elsewhere, the maximum damage is more contained.

A burner wallet does not protect the funding account from every threat. Public blockchain analysis can link it to the address that supplied gas. Reusing usernames, ENS names, browser profiles, or exchange withdrawals may reveal additional connections. Malware on the same device can target both wallets, and a copied seed phrase remains dangerous regardless of the balance at creation.

Set up the wallet with trusted software, confirm its address, and transfer only a cheap working balance. Review every requested permission and use exact or limited approvals where practical. Hardware signing can still help, but convenience-oriented burner setups often remain hot wallets. Never import a main seed phrase into an app merely to create a separate account if the goal is isolating key exposure.

After use, move legitimate assets to a verified address, revoke approvals, close application sessions, and retain necessary transaction records. Revocation requires an on-chain transaction and does not undo actions already completed. Deleting the app only removes local access. A burner can be reused for related low-risk activity if its keys remain secure, but a wallet exposed to a suspected scam should be abandoned permanently. The strongest pattern combines wallet separation with careful signing and minimal funds.
