A DeFi vault is a smart contract or product that pools deposited assets and applies a defined management strategy. The strategy may lend, provide liquidity, stake, rebalance, hedge, or compound rewards. Depositors usually receive shares representing a proportional claim on the vault's assets rather than a fixed guaranteed balance.
When a user deposits, the vault calculates shares from its current asset value and share supply. If the strategy earns net profit, each share can become redeemable for more underlying assets. Losses reduce share value. Fees may be charged on management, performance, deposits, or withdrawals. The exact accounting formula and valuation source must be understood.
Vaults matter because they automate complex actions and pool capital efficiently. A user can access a strategy without manually claiming and reinvesting rewards. Automation also concentrates risk. A multisignature reduces one-key risk but can still change behavior. Audits and tests help find code defects, yet cannot guarantee market liquidity, honest governance, or safe future upgrades. Historical returns do not establish future performance.
Vault accounting should be independently reproducible. Teams need to reconcile assets across every strategy, accrued fees, pending rewards, debts, and withdrawal obligations. Inflated or stale valuations can let early users redeem too much and transfer losses to those who remain. Limits, conservative pricing, and delayed profit recognition may reduce this risk but can also make displayed returns lag actual conditions.
Before depositing, identify every strategy and dependency, how shares are priced, where yield comes from, and when withdrawals can be restricted. Review fees, administrator powers, audits, loss history, and concentration. Start small and keep fee currency available. A vault can simplify execution, but users still accept the complete technical, market, liquidity, and governance risk of the assets managed underneath.
